Public health officials and districts that have retrofitted their fleets say, however, that any added maintenance isn't prohibitively expensive and shouldn't prevent districts from making improvements that could benefit children's health. Diesel exhaust can aggravate asthma and contains carcinogens, such as benzene. Buses from model year 2007 or later automatically include pollution controls.
'We are disappointed that there aren't more takers,' said Health Department spokesman Guillermo Cole. 'We would hope that they would do what they can to protect children and others in the community from these diesel fumes. We think this is a no-brainer, especially for schools that qualify for full funding.'
The retrofitting costs $1,000 to $10,000 per bus, depending on the type of bus, according to the Health Department

One issue Covington said he takes very seriously is the smoke that enters the communities from these fires.
Its a health problem for people who have asthma or other respiratory problems, Covington said. One possible solution is to burn with greater wind conditions so theres more smoke disbursement.
Despite these concerns, forest thinning will continue.Brehl said each area will be burned every seven to 10 years. However, subsequent burnings will be less severe because there will be less growth remaining from the last one.
Itll keep going because the forest will keep growing, Brehl said. We will always have prescribed fires

'The mother was present during the removal of the baby, and observed Tiller inserting a tube into the back of the baby's skull and vacuuming out the brains. This disturbed her so greatly that she told pro-lifers that she could not sleep for three days because of what she saw,' OR said.
During the abortion, the patient suffered an asthma attack and cardiac arrest. After being revived with epinephrine and defibrillation, Tiller told her to hold her IV bags, and he drove her to the hospital in his own car.
Her experience resembled that of Christin Gilbert, 19, who died from untreated sepsis during a third-trimester abortion at Tiller's business in 2005, OR said. An ambulance transported another woman away from the clinic on Oct. 2 and yet another patient today. The condition of today's patient is unknown

Brianna Gidias never experienced the symptoms of an asthma attack until a recent school program.
'It was hard,' the Brentwood Middle School student said after participating in a breathing exercise meant to simulate an asthma attack.
This was the first time school officials brought representatives from the American Respiratory Alliance and Duquesne University School of Nursing students to the school to teach students about the respiratory disorder.

'It is a reliable station, providing much-needed electricity for that part of Massachusetts, and it is in compliance with the strict environmental regulations.'
Norvelle's comments echo those made back in July, when the company was facing a deadline to present a plan to show how it will meet more stringent emissions standards set to take effect in 2011, including the carbon-dioxide-limiting Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.
The company announced it would invest millions but rely heavily on existing practices and a cap-and-trade program to achieve compliance, which disappointed many activists although it satisfied the new regional requirements. But Norvelle noted that the mere fact that the company was 'looking at 2012' meant it was here to stay.
He reiterated last week, '[The plant is] an important part of the community providing a valuable commodity.'
Bright noted elevated breast-cancer rates in Marblehead and spoke specifically about a study done by the Harvard School of Public Health in 2000, which directly linked pollution caused by the Salem Harbor Power Plant to increased cardiac disease and respiratory problems in the area, including asthma and bronchitis.
She said the American Lung Association and the New England Journal of Medicine, among other organizations, have also conducted studies linking power-plant pollution to premature death.
'Does this stuff really make people sick?' she asked. 'The answer is yes..

Childhood in rural KwaZulu-Natal is short and often difficult. Poverty, hunger, lack of social services, crime and HIV are some of the struggles children shouldn't have to face, but do. Schoolchildren in the village of Nkandla, in the heart of Zululand, have a variety of problems that may not even occur to adults: from dusty roads that cause asthma to being forced to walk an hour each day to school because of inadequate public transport. Some children wish for running water and electricity to cut down on the many hours they spend every day collecting firewood and fetching water from the river.
'If I had less chores to do, I would have more time to do my homework and study for school,' one girl said.
At Mphathesitha High School in Nkandla the Sonke Gender Justice project and Unicef worked with 20 learners on a photography and writing project that aims to turn their hopes and dreams into instant community action. The four-day PhotoVoice workshop was designed to create a space for children between the ages of 12 and 18 to talk about their experiences and mobilise adults, especially men, to help them meet their needs.
'We want to build confidence and self-esteem by teaching new skills,' says Sonke PhotoVoice project manager Nyanda Khanyile. 'Many children in rural communities experience social ills but they don't know how to express themselves.'
After the initial conversations, children were taught how to transfer their stories into photography and writing

Right behind Bower are senior Abby Hewitt, who didn't have as good a race at the WPIAL championships as she did in placing second to Bower at the Tri-State Track Coaches Association championships, and junior Mary Jo Jakubek, who was sixth at the WPIAL meet. Senior Nicole Egan and junior Genie Fratto have been solid all season and freshmen Annie Jakubek and Alex Brant have been, at times, outstanding.
Brant was 46th overall at the Tri-State Coaches meet, but her asthma bothered her at the WPIAL championships and she finished 115th.
'We think we have that solved. She looked pretty good running in the cold Saturday,' Curci said

He got small grants but worked mostly without pay, said his daughter, Kelly Bachman.
'He worked 12-hour days after he retired,' she said.
Among other projects, he worked with the Hoover vacuum company on improving vacuum cleaners, and with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to develop devices to measure toxics in the home.
One of Roberts' biggest accomplishments was co-authoring a 1998 paper in Scientific American explaining the hazards of toxic chemicals in house dust.
And he was tireless about gathering data to show that, by keeping homes clean, parents can minimize childrens' exposure to agents that can cause asthma. He went beyond that, even, to show how providing help to parents on that score actually pays off for society in the long run with fewer sick days taken by parents and children.
Described by those who knew him as a warm and cheerful person with a gift for recognizing the aptitudes of those he recruited to help, Roberts also had a stubborn streak. One of his volunteer jobs was as president of the local chapter of the Theosophical Society. When he stepped down, the board of directors gave him a toy bulldozer as a memento

Americans who are less affluent are just as concerned about environmental issues, though they are more likely to be dirty air, polluted water, and asthma rates

Physical injury may include bruising, broken bones, or traumatic brain injury. But it's important to know that abusive situations may have more than just physical effects on victims. For example, domestic violence has been associated with increased risk of chronic health problems including depression, alcohol and substance abuse, and sexually transmitted infections.
Also, domestic violence impacts more than just the victims; it affects children who have witnessed abuse or violence. Children exposed to violence may suffer from symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder such as bed-wetting and nightmares. Moreover, these children are at a greater risk of developing conditions like asthma, headaches, and flu.
So, what can we do to prevent domestic violence? The best approach to prevent abuse is to educate ourselves and our communities about domestic violence. It is important to share information about local shelters and services to support victims who want to leave an abusive situation. For information about safety when leaving an abusive situation, visit www.leavingabuse.com.
For immediate help, the National Domestic Violence Hotline (800) 799-SAFE connects directly to a local shelter in your area

That's why we strongly urge legislators next year to consider solutions such as allowing these families to enroll annually. Reforms like these could save money over the long run. For instance, reports show it costs about $100 in Texas to treat a child with mild asthma in a doctor's office. But it costs $7,600 to treat that child if he ends up in a hospital for three days because his family didn't have insurance to see a doctor.
Simplifying Medicaid rules is the right thing to do for eligible families. It also would make our health system work more efficiently.

The pall of smoke that hung around the city today, a day after Diwali, is detrimental for humans and animals alike because it induces respiratory problems.
For environmentalist Rakesh Sinha the post-Diwali smog is more a cause for concern than any other substance, as it contains poisonous gasses that leave symptomatic effects such as headaches, irritation and allergies often for weeks after celebrations.
The suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the gasses remains in the atmosphere for a longer time thus residents do breathe in sometime. Animals, too, are affected by the smoke. The SPM gets deposited in the trachea, bronchi and lungs causing allergy, irritation and even asthma attacks.
The pollutants during Diwali are also responsible for increasing chances of heart attacks coupled with high blood pressure, Sinha said.

Many doctors and weight-loss professionals encourage the increasingly overweight population to take up swimming with its low-impact, yet effective form of exercise. Swimming also helps people who have injuries overcome them and people who suffer from asthma. Expectant mothers can swim safely throughout their pregnancies and older people find that the gentle nature of water exercise can have many health benefits. Swimming in the region is incredibly popular because of the increasing number of ocean swims being held at our beaches over the summer months

Here are some tips to stay healthy from Dr. Mark Ebadi of Colorado Allergy and Asthma Centers in Denver.
Get the flu vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now recommending the vaccine for all children ages 6 months to 18 years. It is also highly recommended for anyone age 50 or older.
Ebadi added, 'Elderly patients and kids die of the flu every year. So we're preventing these viral infections that can be lethal and even if they are not lethal, they can be debilitating.'
Unfortunately, there are many misconceptions and concerns related to the vaccine

Instead of doing research on a total of 55 diseases, it now will work on 27.
The changes, announced to the staff on Tuesday and effective immediately, are part of the 'Project Impact' that Wyeth announced in January, a restructuring meant to cut about 10 percent of its then-50,000 jobs. The shift won't entail eliminating even more jobs, but will mean some research scientists will have to move to new areas geographically or in research specialty or leave Wyeth.
The six areas of focus now are vaccines; cancer; inflammatory disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and severe asthma; metabolic conditions including diabetes and obesity; musculoskeletal disorders such as arthritis and spinal fractures; and neuroscience, including treatments for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, depression, schizophrenia and chronic pain.
'We believe that we need more depth within these areas and more broadening within a focused disease area to ... identify unique targets that we can develop drugs for,' said Loh, who heads Wyeth's clinical drug research in all areas except women's health and neuroscience

br/> 6967 ASTHMA IN CHILDREN CHANGES WITH THE SEASONS
Health-care utilization for children with asthma changes with the seasons, peaking in the fall. Using data from the United Healthcare database, researchers from the University of North Carolina reviewed health-care utilization patterns and asthma medication usage in children aged 2 to 5 years and 6 to 12 years from 2002 to 2004. Results showed that health-care utilization was minimal in the summer; however, September consistently served as a point of inflection for health-care utilization for both age groups. In October and November, peak emergency department visits for the two age groups were approximately 2.4 to 2.8 times higher than in July; outpatient visits were approximately 3.1 to 3.3 times higher; and hospitalizations were approximately 3.7 to 5.6 times higher. Asthma controller and reliever medications claims increased beginning in September and peaked in December. Rates for health-care use and claims for asthma medications also were elevated in February

Planting efforts have been focused in six designated 'Trees for Public Health' neighborhoods, to increase a tree canopy in the areas and help combat high rates of adolescent asthma.

As a child, I loved running games like Tag and Red Light, Green Light 1-2-3, but that all changed in high school. Freshman year gym was track - field. At the first class, Sister Sadist commanded us to run a mile. No warm up, no nothing, just run. The girls who had asthma okay, me were told to suck it up. 'Diva in training' that I was, I refused, choosing instead to walk the mile. I got an F. The only F of my academic career and I still stand by it with pride. Consequently, any love I might have had for the gym, running and religion evaporated

Invercargill couple John and Susan Roach have had any illusions of a better life in the deep south shattered after their car was given an impromptu paint job on Monday.

Mrs Roach said yesterday her concept of the city as a safer place to live had been shattered after she and her husband's 1995 Hyundai Sonata had four different-coloured cans of paint poured over it on Monday morning.
Suffering from empty nest syndrome after their children left home the couple, who both have health problems, shifted to Invercargill from Wairarapa in June.
Mrs Roach said she had had a fitful sleep overnight on Sunday because of asthma attacks and had been up several times during the night - the last time being about 6am. At that time the car, which was parked on the street outside her Ythan St home, was fine.
However, by 8am it was a different story.
It was such a shock just to get up and see it, she said

(Media-Newswire.com) - The Government today ( October 28 ) launched a strategic framework to prevent and control non-communicable diseases ( NCD ) in Hong Kong.
The framework, entitledPromoting Health in Hong Kong: A Strategic Framework for Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases, was developed by the Department of Health with input from experts of various disciplines and making reference to the World Health Organisations guiding principles in disease prevention and health promotion. The framework document provides a common frame of reference for understanding the threat of NCD; and outlines the principles and key elements for implementation of the strategy to prevent and control NCD.
The Secretary for Food and Health, Dr York Chow pointed out that the proportion of deaths due to NCD has increased to more than 60% in recent years. With an ageing population, the burden of NCD was expected to rise in the decades ahead. 'If left uncontrolled, there will be significant health, social and economic impacts on our population,' Dr Chow said.
The overall goal of the strategy is to improve the health and quality of life of people in Hong Kong, which will in turn help lower their chance of having NCD.'
To achieve the goal, six strategic directions have been identified for focusing the attention, resources and actions at areas in which investments in NCD prevention and control could bring the greatest return in terms of health outcomes. These are:
1 ) supporting new and strengthening existing health promotion and NCD prevention initiatives or activities that are in line with the strategy;
2 ) generating an effective information base and system to guide action across the disease pathway;
3 ) strengthening partnership and fostering engagement of all relevant stakeholders;
4 ) building capacity and capability to combat NCD;
5 ) ensuring a health sector that is responsive to the NCD challenges and to improve the system of care; and
6 ) strengthening and developing supportive health promoting legislation.
A high-level steering committee, chaired by Dr Chow and comprising representatives from the Government, public and private sectors, academia, professional bodies, relevant industries and other key partners, has been set up to deliberate on and oversee the overall roadmap for implementation

I ve always known onions are good for you, but even I am surprised at the new research on onion health benefits, which shows they may rival those of garlic. Onions have long been used to treat lung problems, and now research confirms the effectiveness of onions in decreasing bronchial spasms and allergy-induced bronchial constriction in asthma patients. Onions also help prevent bacterial lung infections.
Onions have a number of compounds that can help reduce cholesterol and blood pressure, and help prevent harmful blood clots.
They can also help reduce the risk for cancer, particularly stomach and colon cancer. In one study, people who ate about half an onion a day cut their cancer risk in half

WILMINGTON, Del., Oct 29, 2008 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Data presented today from two pivotal efficacy and safety trials, SHINE and SUN, demonstrated that SYMBICORT(R) (budesonide/formoterol fumarate dihydrate) Inhalation Aerosol significantly improved lung function and was well-tolerated in patients with moderate to very severe Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) relative to budesonide and formotorol administered alone, and placebo.(1,2,3,4) Both trials showed safety profiles consistent with the established profiles in asthma for each product.(2,4) In addition, an analysis of these trials showed that patients receiving SYMBICORT achieved a bronchodilatory effect, or opening of the airways, similar to formoterol DPI, and a more rapid effect than that achieved by either budesonide pMDI or placebo.(5) Results were presented today at CHEST 2008, the 74th annual international scientific assembly of the American College of Chest Physicians, held in Philadelphia, October 25-30, 2008.

It's old-school, psychological horror, much like the original 'Halloween,' where what makes you most scared is the suspense of not knowing what the killers are going to do next. As far as gore goes, it's tame if you put it up against any of the 'Saw' movies.
I just kept finding myself going, God, how stupid are Tyler and her boyfriend that they can't fend off two seemingly young women and a slow-moving guy who breathes like he has asthma? The couple are in a remote house, but it's packed with tons of stuff, including a shotgun and dozens of rounds of ammunition. The movie aims to make you scared thinking what if you were in the victims' places. All I kept seeing was fireplace pokers, logs, knives and knickknacks which I would use to fight to the death if psychos were after me. Plus, I think you would have to look long and hard to find anyone demented enough to want to hurt that sweet, cute Liv Tyler

Perforomist(TM) Inhalation Solution belongs to a class of medications known as long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonists (LABAs). LABAs may increase the risk of asthma-related death. Data from a large placebo-controlled US study comparing the safety of another LABA (salmeterol) or placebo added to usual asthma therapy showed an increase in asthma-related deaths in patients receiving salmeterol. This finding with salmeterol may apply to formoterol (a LABA), the active ingredient in Perforomist(TM) Inhalation Solution.

Two studies show Symbicort improves lung function in COPD Symbicort also opens airways in less than 15 minutes AstraZeneca drug is rival to GlaxoSmithKline's Advair

LONDON, Oct 29 (Reuters) - AstraZeneca Plc's (AZN.L: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) asthma drug Symbicort can also improve lung function in patients with 'smoker's lung', or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), results of two clinical trials showed on Wednesday.

The news underpins the Anglo-Swedish company's drive to make Symbicort an important rival to GlaxoSmithKline Plc's (GSK.L: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) top-selling product Advair.

Both are inhaled drugs combining a corticosteroid and a long-acting beta-agonist.

AstraZeneca filed an application with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in April for approval to sell Symbicort as a treatment for COPD, in addition to asthma, ramping up the competition with Advair.

Data presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians in Philadelphia showed Symbicort significantly improved lung function and was well-tolerated in patients in two COPD studies

Hospital Sick Day : A Day in the Life's post about her little girl ending up in the E.R. with a severe asthma attack had us a little teary-eyed. This is an eye-opener for moms who have been lucky enough to have never made a trip to the hospital. One thing's for sure: Thank goodness for stickers

These include Telavancin for the treatment of the hospital-acquired pneumonia in severely ill and older patients and Telavancin for the treatment of the hospital-acquired pneumonia caused by MRSA and MSAA.
Turning to the horizon, I am pleased to report that enrolment is completed in the Phase IIb studies for both '444 and '698, and that we remain on track to report results from these studies later this year and in early 2009. In the asthma program, the Phase IIb study with '444 is completed patient's last visit and we expect to report top line data from this study late this year. All three studies with the lead inhaled corticosteroid '698 and patients with mild, moderate and severe asthma now completed enrolment. We remain on track to report data from all three '698 studies together in early 2009

FAILING flab fighters have finally been given the perfect excuse fat is all in the genes.
bodycopy a font-size: 12px;
American diet guru Peter DAdamo claims weight gain is genetic and dieters need to match their body type to the right food to succeed.
He reckons that whether you can enjoy things like coffee and red meat depends on which of six types you are a Warrior, Hunter, Teacher, Explorer, Gatherer or Nomad.
Eating for the wrong type could make you pile on the pounds even when youre on a diet.
Dr DAdamos GenoType Diet book, out in Britain next year, has an eating plan based on the celeb favourite Blood Type Diet that actress Martine McCutcheon, 32, used to follow.
EMMA WALL has digested the book, and here serves up suggestions of which of the six body types you are and exactly what you should be scoffing to stay healthy.
THE WARRIOR
Tall, thin and healthy when younger but middle aged spread could catch up with you.
Diet: Low Glycemic Index, such as wholegrains and fruit and veg.
Superfoods: Cauliflower, seabass, cottage cheese, pine nuts, peanuts, tofu, edamame beans and -walnut oil.
Cut out: High Glycemic Index grub, like white bread and pasta, high fat meat and dairy food.
THE HUNTER
Has lots of adrenaline and nervous energy. Tall and thin but subject to allergies and asthma attacks.
Diet: Low-gluten and meat-rich.
Superfoods: Salmon, lamb, beef, hard cheese, brown or wild rice, broccoli, grapefruit, artichokes.
Cut out: Nuts, grains, seeds, wheat and soft cheese.
THE TEACHER
Has great stamina and is strong, sinewy and stable. Can cope with lots of types of unfamiliar bacteria.
Diet: Plant-based, with white meat and fish.
Superfoods: White fish, turkey, black beans, peanuts, peas, tofu, olive oil, flaxseeds, avocado, carrots.
Cut out: White carbs, red meat and sugary foods.
THE EXPLORER
Has broad shoulders, muscles, narrow hips, little body fat and is adventurous. Caffeine and alcohol may not agree with them.
Diet: Copper-rich foods like liver, plus beans, cheese and meat.
Superfoods: Lamb, ric-otta, mozzarella, lentils, parsnips, ginger, raspberry, and calves liver.
Cut out: Alcohol, coffee and painkillers.
THE GATHERER
Prone to obesity and full-figured even when not overweight.
Diet: Low-GI and high protein.
Superfoods: Haddock, lamb, turkey, eggs, sole, flaxseed, cottage cheese, spinach, quinoa.
Cut out: Microwaved and fried food.
THE NOMAD
Muscular and large boned with legs which are longer than the torso. Can be vulnerable to immune problems.
Diet: Foods rich in fatty acids like mackerel and salmon, dairy and red meat.
Superfoods: Beef, halibut, calves liver, herring, caviar, cheddar, cottage cheese, pecan nuts, cod liver oil.
Cut out: Barley, oats and rye that can cause diarrhoea and vomiting.

MacLeod's A sample showed a higher reading than the World Anti-Doping Agency's permitted level of testosterone during a routine test he gave to dope-busters at a Scotland training camp last season.
It is the second time inside a year the Scarlets player has been placed under investigation.
MacLeod appeared in front of a Scottish Rugby Union disciplinary panel in February after testing positive for a banned substance following a mix-up over an inhaler he was using to treat his asthma condition.
That test revealed the 29-year-old had been using a different brand from the one he had been granted a therapeutic use exemption by doping chiefs.
The three-man panel accepted there had been an administrative error and decided not to ban him

We made an appointment to see a GP in Owston Ferry and he concluded it wasn't asthma and she needed to be referred to a specialist.'Mr Dolman said his wife saw more than one specialist before she was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis fibres in the lung.Afterwards Mrs Dolman sought legal advice and made a statement saying she believed she had come into contact with bird dander when employed at Turvwood Pet Supplies from 1991-94.Her condition deteriorated and she was admitted to Doncaster Royal Infirmary on October 19, where she died the next day.A post-mortem examination has been carried out at DRI and tissue specimens taken from Mrs Dolman's body have been sent to Sheffield for analysis.Deputy Coroner Fred Curtis said he would adjourn the inquest to await the results of the tests 'to find out if her death is in any way connected with her employment'.Mrs Dolman is due to be buried in the churchyard at Owston Ferry on Friday. DANBURY -- In the first six weeks of Rogers Park Middle School's new health center, its staff has treated pneumonia, severe asthma, poison ivy, a dental abscess, a perforated ear drum and a strep infection.
And they gave flu vaccinations and conducted medical exams.
The health center, which had an open house Monday, is the third free clinic in a city school. One opened at Danbury High 15 years ago, and one opened at Broadview Middle School seven years ago

br/>7720 PATIENTS' HOME PHOTOS HELP IDENTIFY ASTHMA TRIGGERS
The use of in-home photography may be a more cost-effective alternative to in-home inspections for identifying asthma and allergy triggers. Researchers from Truman Medical Center and the University of Missouri, Kansas City, MO, selected 50 adult subjects with persistent asthma to take photos of a predetermined list of areas in their home using a disposable camera. All subjects completed a questionnaire addressing triggers prior to and after taking in-home photos. All film was reviewed with the subjects at the third visit. Subjects then received education on the identified triggers and cost-effective measures to reduce or eliminate exposure

The three members between them offer about 2,000 hours of volunteer service each year at a variety of public events in the borough.
Mrs Newall added: Im still in shock, but I am delighted and grateful to receive the award.
I have managed to save a life, when a young girl had an asthma attack and collapsed.
I had to give her mouth-to-mouth seven times before the ambulance arrived.
The work is very rewarding and its nice having something to give back to people.
At the ceremony, Mrs Newall and Mrs Milne were made Serving Sisters of the Order of St John and Mr Alterman was given the tribute of Serving Brother.
We dont work for St John to get honours of awards but it was lovely to receive this, said Mrs Milne, who has volunteered since 1989

The study confirms what scientists had always suspected that an over-response by the immune system is actually to blame for cold symptoms rather than the virus itself. It's almost as if the virus triggers allergy symptoms, one might say, which is why the symptoms of seasonal rhinitis (hayfever) are so similar to the cold and why it is often referred to as a 'summer cold'.
Proud is internationally renowned for his research into allergies and asthma.
More importantly, however, the researchers have identified several new targets for treatment that may one day help researchers to develop more effective therapies to minimize symptoms of the common cold and possibly even prevent infection.
The work was publishedin the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (Nov 1;178(9):962-968).

Tesco has been forced to recall some of its own brand sausage meals after it was found that that they contain an allergen that is not announced on the label.
The meals contain sulphur dioxide, a preservative used in a wide range of foods, including sausages and burgers. Although safe for the majority of people to consume, sulphites can trigger asthma and symptoms of anaphylactic shock - such as hives, dizziness, diarrhoea and difficulty swallowing - in sulphite-sensitive people.
Food labelling rules require pre-packed food sold in the UK, and the rest of the European Union, to show clearly on the label if it contains sulphur dioxide or sulphites at levels above 10mg per kg or per litre.
A spokesperson for the Food Standards Agency said: Tesco has recalled some of its own-brand Prepared Sausage Meals because they contain sulphur dioxide, which is not mentioned on the label

Dr. Charles Clemens, medical chief of staff at the Student Health Center, said vaccinations would also be available at the facility during flu season, which typically runs from November to February.
Vaccinations at the Student Health Center cost about $20, Clemens said.
Clemens said SIUC medical professionals follow the CDC in recommending everyone get vaccinated, especially those in group housing or dormitories.
'They're in large gatherings of people where it is likely to share germs,' Clemens said. 'We're recommending that all college students get a flu vaccine.'
Clemens said people with ongoing medical problems such as asthma or diabetes are encouraged especially to get vaccinated because they are at a higher risk of contracting the flu and having it turn into a more serious problem such as pneumonia.
Clemens said serious risks of the vaccination are rare and the vaccination would not cause the flu itself.
'That's a myth that a lot of people worry about that you'll get the flu (from the vaccine),' Clemens said.
Mike Brewer, a building service sub foreman in the Physical Plant, said he hardly even felt the flu shot. Brewer said he normally gets vaccinated every year and so does his family

Over the next four years, we expect the value of systemic drugs delivered via inhalation to increase at an average annual rate of thirty-three percent. During the same period, inhaled drugs for upper respiratory conditions including asthma, and COPD will increase at a rate of between eight and nine percent. Systemic inhaled drugs will represent just under nine percent of all inhaled drugs worldwide in 2011, up from less than five percent in 2007.

Seppi says the majority of people not going to the doctor are people with insurance.
'Mainly in the younger patients because more the burden is put on them for their health care in terms of higher deductibles and co-pays,' Dr. Seppi said.
Depending on what type of insurance people have, co-pays vary $15 to $50 a visit, and with the additional cost of prescriptions, a trip to the doctor just got out of reach financially.
'I did have a patient that actually had gone to the emergency room because of shortness of breath and didn't have the money to come into the office. When she finally came into the office we found that it wasn't asthma that was the cause of the problems it was a heart condition,' Dr. Seppi said.
Dr. Seppi says his office has seen a ten percent decrease in their patient load, and he expects to see even fewer patients in the future.
'As the economy gets worse we are expecting it to get worse,' Dr

nlike woolly caterpillars predicting winter severity, no doctor is venturing out on a limb to fuzzily forecast how bad the cold-and-flu season will be this year, or how it might affect children. But it's safe to say that medical professionals believe prevention is worth a pound of cure. 'For starters, the Centers for Disease Control and the American Academy of Pediatrics this year is recommending that everyone get a flu shot between the ages of 6 months and 18 years old,' said Dr. Mary Ann Mancano, chairman of the department of pediatrics at St. Joseph Medical Center, Bern Township. That's a change from previous years, she said, when flu shots were encouraged for only the youngest (ages 6 months to 5 years) and older children at risk (asthma sufferers, for example). 'Little children can be germ spreaders and, with the flu, they can have the same level of complications as adults,' Mancano said. When children get the flu, they also become targets for bacterial pneumonia and ear infections that can ultimately lead to hospitalization. 'A person with the flu is going to feel like someone ran them over with a truck,' said Dr. Tom C

But 160,000 low-income Michigan children still have no health insurance, despite the fact that two-thirds of them qualify for MIChild or Medicaid.
Last year, Congress voted to expand the State Children's Health Insurance Plan (SCHIP) that would have allowed Michigan to expand coverage to those kids, but President Bush vetoed the bill. SCHIP later was reauthorized at current levels, leaving many Michigan children without access to basic health care. Several studies have shown that kids with chronic diseases such as asthma and diabetes have higher school absentee rates, do poorly on tests and are at greater risk of dropping out.
Congress also needs to help Michigan fix its expanding dropout crisis. More than 21,000 Michigan students dropped out of school last year and more than one in six Michigan adults do not have a high school diploma, severely limiting their income potential.
With an average dropout rate of 15 percent, Michigan needs help in the form of federal incentives for multiple pathways to graduation for young people, including creative school/community linkages that would help dropouts reconnect with educational opportunities

But no matter how difficult the decisions are today, we know our long-term strategy is right.
That said, Merck s numbers weren t all negative. Sales of first-in-class diabetes drug Januvia and novel HPV vaccine Gardasil beat analyst estimates, while asthma and allergy blockbuster Singulair revenue remained flat from the previous year. The biggest hit was to high-cholesterol drugs Vytorin and Zetia, which both saw sales drop 15 percent in light of the long-delayed Enhance data suggesting that Vytorin was no better than generic statins at decreasing arterial plaque, yet works fine for lowering cholesterol.
The combination of Merck s base business, new product growth including Gardasil, Januvia, and [breakthrough HIV drug] Isentress we believe, will exceed $5 billion in peak sales, Deutsche Bank analyst Barbara Ryan said in a letter. An agile, increasingly lean cost structure will support superior growth over the next several years. Further, Merck s late-stage pipeline has the potential to extend this record into the next decade.

WATERBURY Seven wood-boiler manufacturers have agreed to make hydronic heaters that meet tough new federal air standards cutting particle emissions from the units a sharp 90 percent.
The Environmental Protection Agency's voluntary phase 2 program to reduce emissions from the wood heaters has been aimed at providing consumers with cleaner wood-burning alternatives, officials at its New England regional office said recently.
'Here in New England, while many families and businesses are choosing wood as their winter heating fuel source, the new phase 2 outdoor wood heaters will help people choose a model that is better for air quality than older, unqualified units,' Robert Varney, regional administrator of EPA's New England office, said.
EPA announced the more stringent phase 2 standards for wood boilers at an open-house event held recently in Waterbury. Cleaner units that comply with phase 2 emission levels no more than 0.32 pounds of particle pollution per million BTUs of heat output were showcased at the event.
EPA first launched its voluntary emission reduction program in 2007, and set the phase 1 standard for units to be 70 percent cleaner than older models that do not qualify. At the time, Vermont was the first state to take steps to encourage cleaner and more efficient outdoor wood heaters by adopting the initial cleaner standard of 0.44 pounds per million BTUs, noted George Crombie, secretary of the state Agency of Natural Resources.
'Vermonters have a long tradition of heating with wood, but as regulators we must ensure the cleanest burning units are available,' Crombie said recently.
Outdoor wood heaters, in particular, pose a health concern because they emit a significant amount of smoke and particle pollution, New England EPA officials said.
Meanwhile, exposure to final particle pollution along with the smoke from the wood burners is linked to a number of serious health problems, EPA officials said.
Smoke-related ailments include decreased lung function, aggravated asthma, irregular heartbeat, nonfatal heart attacks, and early death in people with heart and lung disease, officials said.
Children, people with heart or lung disease and older adults are the people who are most susceptible to the effects of particle pollution, EPA officials said.
The newer wood-boiler units have an appeal to consumers because they are not only safer but also more efficient, according to Phil Etter, environmental analyst for the Air Pollution Control Division in the Agency of Natural Resources.
'They will burn less wood and will burn safer because they won't burn as much creosote,' Etter said.
Even though the EPA emission reduction program is voluntary, it offers manufacturers the opportunity to have their units tested by an EPA-accredited third party, Etter said.
A number of other northern states besides Vermont and including Massachusetts and Maine, have proposed similar regulations, EPA officials said. Vermont officials now have a plan that would enact the phase 2 standards in the spring of 2010, Etter said.
The wood-boiler manufacturers that have told EPA they will make the cleaner units include Alternative Fuel Boilers (Econoburn), Central Boiler, Greenwood Technologies, Hardy Manufacturing, Heat Source, Northwest Manufacturing (WoodMaster) and Silver Woods Metals Inc. (Wood Doctor).
A number of those companies presented either chunk wood boilers or wood pellet boilers that met the phase 2 standard at a Vermont/EPA-sponsored showcase in Waterbury last week, Etter said.
Wood Doctor is an example of a company that makes a unit that meets the phase 2 standard and will likely be certified eventually for use in Vermont, Etter said. At this time, Vermont does not regulate the pellet boilers made by some wood-boiler companies at the showcase, he said.
So far, the wood boiler emission reduction program has cut fine particle emissions by 1,200 tons annually, EPA officials said.
Etter, the air pollution environmental analyst, said his sense is that outdoor wood boilers have been selling rather well for manufacturers generally

But grass pollens persist for only about two months (May and June), he says. In some states, ragweed and other irritating pollens hammer sensitive sinuses spring through fall. Ragweed grows sparsely in isolated parts of Oregon.
Oregon and Washington stand out for a high rate of asthma, an airway disease often linked to allergies: About 15 percent of adults in both states said in federal surveys they had asthma, compared with about 13 percent nationwide.

In the big picture, geography probably matters little. Moving to avoid allergy triggers seldom solves the allergy problems. 'It may work for a year or two,' O'Hollaren says. 'But if someone has the genetic predisposition and is exposed to enough allergens, frequently they will develop allergies in their new location over time.'

The clinics are open to all adults 18 years and older. This year, there is a full supply of vaccine available so more people than ever can seek protection from the flu.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an annual flu vaccine is the best way to reduce the chance of getting the flu, a serious infection of the respiratory tract caused by the influenza virus. Approximately 36,000 people die from the flu each year. The CDC also states that pneumococcal disease kills more people in the U.S. each year than all other vaccine-preventable diseases combined.

Who should get a flu shot?
All adults 18 and older who want to reduce the risk of becoming ill with influenza or transmitting it to others
People who are 50 and older.
People with chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease or asthma.
People with weakened immune systems from cancer or HIV/AIDS.
People who live with or provide care for children and adults.
Women who will be pregnant during flu season.

Who should get a pneumonia vaccine?
All adults 65 and older who have not had a pneumonia shot.
Adults 65 and older who received a pneumonia vaccine before their 60th birthday.
People 18 and older with a history of chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease or asthma.
People with weakened immune system from cancer or HIV/AIDS.

How much do the vaccines cost?
Individuals who have Medicare Part B need only bring their card to receive the flu and/or pneumonia vaccine. For all others, the cost for the flu immunization is $33 and the cost for the pneumonia vaccine is $53. MasterCard and Visa are accepted.

Supt. of Schools Kristine Nash said officials became concerned after a recent outbreak of mold at the Hanover Middle School was detected. 'It was found in ceiling tiles,' said Nash on Tuesday. 'It was not airborne and did not pose a health risk.'
According to www.mass.gov, large amounts of mold have been known to trigger allergy attacks in some people, and some who're allergic to mold can develop asthma as a result of continued exposure.
Nash said the schools haven't adopted a formal policy on the food prohibition - which would have to be supported by the school committee - but they do want to create a safer environment for students by limiting food in classrooms. '[That is a] good practice for health reasons, in respect to eliminating pests, ants and mold,' Nash said.
Nash said the schools are asking students to save all food for lunchtime. Bringing water to class is fine, but anything that could spill and cause mold to grow is out of the question. 'Mold needs two things to grow

old weather breeds germs, virusesJenny Bledsoe - Chief Copy Editor
Wednesday, October 29, 2008 issue

Cold weather has arrived and with the seasonal and temperature changes, sickness has also begun to plague college students.
Sinus infections and upper respiratory tract infections are the most common ailments emerging this season, with bronchitis following behind, Andrew Singer, allergist and immunologist at Allergy & Asthma Affiliates in Alcoa, said.
Colder temperatures force students inside, often restricting them to the crowded environments of dorms and apartments. The lack of fresh air and exposure to germs and viruses lurking indoors can lead to increased sensitivity to sickness, which causes or magnifies season-specific illnesses

In the quarter of the year that ended in June, the number of prescriptions filled fell by almost half a percent, the first time in recorded history this statistic has not increased.
An argument can be made in some cases that Americans can stand a little less health care. We certainly spend more per person than any other country, while some who spend far less manage to remain healthier.
But going without regular checks during pregnancy or playing Russian roulette with severe illnesses like diabetes cannot be good.
Both governmental and personal choices must be made. On the government side of the equation, it is appalling that citizens in the United States should ever have to choose between putting dinner on the table or filling their child's prescription for asthma medication. A new president and Congress must pull the plug on foreign adventures and begin caring for people right here at home.
Personally, if we can't afford to go to the doctor but can afford cable television or cigarettes, it's time for a dramatic re-evaluation of priorities. Getting and keeping good health has to come first. It is a choice that includes good nutrition, exercise and seeking a doctor's help when we need to. Procrastination is a recipe for disaster.
We can and should prioritize health-care spending. But we've got to be smart about it
