This 10-year stream of coin designs has attracted about 147 million collectors, and the Mint has earned about $3.5 billion in profits from that collecting. Here in Birmingham, lawyer Jim Noles has caught the ground swell by writing 'A Pocketful of History: Four Hundred Years of America - One State Quarter at a Time,' a book that describes what each quarter says about a state's history or culture.
Since 1999, the Mint has released one state quarter every 10 weeks or so, each with a design or theme that represents that state on the 'tails' side of the coin.

There's the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher in flight on the Oklahoma quarter; the Wright brothers' first airplane flight in 1903 on the North Carolina quarter; and Caesar Rodney, delegate to the Continental Congress, riding through thundershowers while ill with cancer and asthma to vote for the resolution of independence, on the Delaware quarter.
Noles' book, published in May by Da Capo Press, has gotten good reviews.
One reader on Amazon.com, W. Brantley, wrote: 'I didn't know I was interested in the 50 State Quarters Program until I started reading this excellent book.'

The council came into being in 2006 after federal grant dollars were given to Clark County to focus on ways to reduce rates of obesity, diabetes and asthma and increase physical activity, consumption of healthy foods and smoke-free environments.
The Food System Council is a big part of that effort. It released a report in August called, Exploring the Clark County Food System, that analyzes the impact of changing food and agriculture systems on public health in the county.
The report offers important information about our community and its food sources that can help guide policy makers on everything from land-use issues to mass transit routes.
For example, the report discusses and highlights issues such as:
-- Clark Countys trouble with fat: 63 percent of adults are overweight or obese, despite 84 percent of residents reporting that they take part in some type of physical activity
