The health department has dealt with cases where people didn t use their exhaust fans to keep moisture out of the house, and as a result had mold growth on the outside of their homes. As a general rule, humidity levels should be maintained at about 40-60 percent to prevent mold from growing, Banwell said. People should remember to watch where they may have water problems, such as leaky pipes, windows, foundations and roofs. With the early summer flooding, people should make sure to clean any mold that may have grown in their basements. Banwell recommends using a detergent to rinse the mold off of cement or limestone walls and then treat them with a bleach solution. If people are allergic to mold, they may experience a sore throat and itchy eyes. They may also be more prone to respiratory infections, and if they have asthma, it may flare up, Banwell said.Carbon monoxide poisoning also becomes a concern this time of year. Banwell recommends people have their furnaces and fireplaces cleaned and inspected. He also advises to look for cracks in exhaust pipes.'Get that done now before you get too far into winter,' Banwell said.Carbon monoxide poisoning can also come from water heaters and dryers, so it s important to have those checked as well, Banwell said.Carbon monoxide detectors are available at most stores for about 40- 50. Since radon is also a concern during the winter heating season, now is also a good time to check homes for the gas., Banwell said. Radon kits are available at both the north and south Rock County Health Department offices for about 12.25, Banwell said
