As a society, we pay dearly for lung and liver cancers. We pay for the terrible antics of problem drinkers and gamblers.
This is why it is appropriate to apply considerable taxes to cigarettes and liquor, and to use gambling revenue to build recreation facilities and concert halls.
As a society, we also pay for asthma and other respiratory ailments that are directly related to tailpipe pollution.
As we learned in Hanneke Brooymans' haunting series about Edmonton's air quality in the Journal, these emissions contain carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide and ultrafine particles that can carry toxic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons into our lungs and other organs. Diesels and vehicles built before 1995 are particularly hazardous. Not to mention that according to 99 per cent of the world's real scientists, greenhouse gases emitted by vehicles are a major contributor to global warming -- a disastrous environmental, social, agricultural and health phenomenon

PRO-CHILD means investing in child health. Ask whether your candidate voted for the bill to reauthorize the children's health insurance program, known as SCHIP. We had the opportunity this year to provide low cost health insurance to an additional 3.5 million children in this country, but the White House and a small minority in Congress blocked it, putting politics before kids' health. This coverage would have cost about $2,000 per year, per child. The average ER cost for one visit for one uninsured child having an asthma attack is about $2,000. One ER visit, or a whole year of health care? Does your candidate claim to be a fiscal conservative? If so, voting for SCHIP was the right choice, because providing comprehensive health care for children is the biggest bang for the buck in health care.
