Thousands of cancer sufferers have been handed a 'death sentence' under plans to ban a drug on the NHS.

The Government's rationing body will deny Revlimid for patients with multiple myeloma - an incurable cancer of the blood cells - despite admitting that it extends life by up to three years.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence says the NHS cannot afford Revlimid which is 'not a cost-effective use of resources'

The report was released as 5,000 biking fans turned out Oct. 19 for the annual Tour de Bronx.
With high rates of asthma from traffic on the borough's major highways, diabetes from obesity and the high cost of gas and maintaining cars, the report says using a bike to exercise and commute to work is a triple-winner.
It cites statistics showing the Bronx has the largest number of people in the city who drive short distances alone to work, saying that with more convenient bike racks installed, that number could be significantly lowered.
'If ever there was a time to make the Bronx and all of New York City a friendlier place for bicycling, it is now,' said Carrin.
Among the report's findings:
- A 4-mile round trip will keep 15 pounds of pollutants out of the air.
- One in four South Bronx adults is obese; two out of three are overweight.
- Almost 32% of Bronx commuters travel less than 30 minutes to work, more than half of them by car
