Public health officials and districts that have retrofitted their fleets say, however, that any added maintenance isn't prohibitively expensive and shouldn't prevent districts from making improvements that could benefit children's health. Diesel exhaust can aggravate asthma and contains carcinogens, such as benzene. Buses from model year 2007 or later automatically include pollution controls.
'We are disappointed that there aren't more takers,' said Health Department spokesman Guillermo Cole. 'We would hope that they would do what they can to protect children and others in the community from these diesel fumes. We think this is a no-brainer, especially for schools that qualify for full funding.'
The retrofitting costs $1,000 to $10,000 per bus, depending on the type of bus, according to the Health Department



One issue Covington said he takes very seriously is the smoke that enters the communities from these fires.
Its a health problem for people who have asthma or other respiratory problems, Covington said. One possible solution is to burn with greater wind conditions so theres more smoke disbursement.
Despite these concerns, forest thinning will continue.Brehl said each area will be burned every seven to 10 years. However, subsequent burnings will be less severe because there will be less growth remaining from the last one.
Itll keep going because the forest will keep growing, Brehl said. We will always have prescribed fires
