What is keeping so many Americans and especially racial and ethnic minorities from taking part in medical studies for diseases from asthma to cancer? According to more than 100 political leaders, public health officials and patient advocates meeting in Harlem to address the under-representation of women, older adults, and minorities in clinical research studies, one of the most difficult stumbling blocks is overcoming the 'Tuskegee Effect' -- the more than 30 years of lingering fear among a large number of African Americans and Latinos that taking part in treatment trials results in inferior care.



Her analytical skills helped build the business. People didn t always believe the devices her company delivered could increase fuel mileage, so she arranged for outside testing to prove it.
It came naturally to me because of my auditor background, she says. People said, Show me, and I said, OK, but it has to be independent.
The other driver of her business was her 13-year-old daughter, Lauren, who has asthma. While green may not have been cool, giving her daughter better air to breathe by taking pollutants out of it was a good goal, Johnson says.
Entrepreneurship also lets her spend more time with her family and do a better job at work, she says.
The nice thing about being an entrepreneur is, as someone told me, you get to pick the 12 hours a day you work, she says.
David Beauchamp, a partner at the Phoenix law office of Bryan Cave LLP, has known Johnson since the two of them were in Valley Leadership together about 15 years ago
