The Prince spent half an hour talking to young people honoured for their bravery by WellChild, the charity of which he is patron.
The 24-year-old, who announced earlier this week that he is to train to become a helicopter pilot, brought smiles to the children's faces as he showed interest in their treatments and asked their families how they coped.
The Prince is following in the footsteps of his mother Diana, Princess of Wales - who was president of Great Ormond Street Hospital - in his involvement with children's charities.
At one point he tried to persuade five-year-old Harvey Fleming, who was born prematurely and spent the first two years of his life in hospital on a ventilator, to part with his glowing toy.
Harvey, from Brigg, North Lincolnshire, who won the Best Brave Child aged 2-5, has chronic lung disease and asthma.
'He was asking if he could have it (the toy), but Harvey wouldn't part with it,' said Paula Fleming, the boy's foster mother.
'When Harvey put it round the Prince's neck he said: 'Oh am I having it now?' but Harvey said 'no'.'
'The Prince is lovely,' she added. 'He is brilliant with the children.'
Another of Monday night's winner - of Best Brave Child aged 6-8 - Lizzie Lansley, eight, from Maybush, Southampton, also spoke to the Prince.
Lizzie is a keen judo competitor despite being given only a 50 per cent chance of walking after being born with a tumour at the base of her spine

CenturyTel will also assume $5.8 billion of Embarq's debt, the companies said.
The name of the new company has not been determined. The deal is expected to close in the second quarter next year, pending regulatory approvals.
