According to Dr. Martin Lustick, a senior vice president at Excellus, upstate New York has significantly higher rates of death from some illnesses than New York as a whole, or the nation.
'If you look at cancer you'll see that while it's about a quarter of our deaths, the number of deaths per 100,000 in the population is about 15 percent higher than the national average and the state average. And if you look at our smoking rates in upstate New York, they're also in the 15 to 20 percent above the state and national average.'
According to Lustick, about 80 percent of lung cancers are attributable to smoking. Heart disease is also brought on by the habit.
Lustick says Excellus compiled the numbers and released them to demonstrate how simple changes in behavior could help keep health care costs down for all subscribers. Lustick pinpoints quitting smoking, being more active, and better nutrition as steps that could reduce the rates of chronic disease, and in turn, reduce the cost of care.
The rest of the top six causes of death, in descending order, are stroke, chronic lower respiratory disease (like emphysema or asthma), accidents, and diabetes. Upstate New York has higher rates of death than the state as a whole for all of the top six killers. It also tops the nation in all categories but accidents and diabetes.
