DANVERS Three-year-old Michael DeLoreto of Peabody had the first asthma attack of his life two weeks ago.
Not only did his parents have to cancel his birthday party at Brooksby Farm that weekend, he wound up spending all weekend at Children's Hospital Boston.
Well before the attack, doctors had diagnosed Michael with asthma at around 18 months, after he spent his first year battling constant bouts of bronchitis and colds. He later developed a severe allergy to cashews and other tree nuts.
Otherwise, Michael, the son of Richard and Kristie DeLoreto, looks like any other toddler.
'It's an awful disease because it's silent,' his mother said
And the results revealed 'an awful lot' about cold infections that scientists were unaware of, he added.
For instance, you might be able to blame a runny nose, sneezing and chills on viperin, but symptoms such as a stuffy nose, headache and cough were not associated with the antiviral.
Viperin, on average, was six times as active in infected as in uninfected volunteers. Other antiviral substances that were activated included two compounds that have linked with flu resistance.
But Proud said it will take years of careful study before researchers have any idea of how to control cold symptoms.
Some cold viruses are linked with more serious conditions such as asthma and chronic bronchitis.
'In young children, if they have recurrent viral infections in early life that are rhinovirus-driven, they are 10 times more likely to develop asthma,' Proud said.
'Eighty-five percent of acute asthma attacks are associated with viruses.'
