Canine asthma
Initiative 155 - the Healthy Montana Kids Plan - will be on the ballot on Nov. 4. If passed, it will provide urgently needed coverage for nearly all uninsured children by December 2009. Providing health insurance for children will do a number of remarkable things. Among these are reducing childhood obesity and boosting academic performance.Nationally, obesity among children ages 2 to 19 years old more than tripled from 5 percent in 1971 to 16.3 percent in 2004, and today, nearly one-third of all kids are overweight. These children are more likely to develop heart disease, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, joint damage, gallstones, digestive disorders, asthma, depression and liver disease, chronic conditions that cost society hundreds of billions to treat. Type 2 diabetes, which in most people is linked to diet and obesity, is by far the most prevalent form of diabetes in adults, and is rapidly becoming so in children.High risk for obesityIn 2007, the American Academy of Pediatrics and 14 other public health organizations called upon physicians and other pediatric health care providers to fully evaluate the growth of children on a yearly basis specifically to identify and treat overweight and obese individuals. It is well known that low-income children are at higher risk for obesity - setting them up for a lifetime of higher rates of chronic disease and medical costs, and lower economic productivity, educational and social attainment. In accord with the AAP recommendations, the Healthy Montana Kids Plan will permit proper assessment and treatment of all Montana children at a time in their lives when they can still be helped. The precise connections between childhood obesity, low rates of physical activity, high rates of absenteeism from school and lower academic achievement are poorly understood
Oh, she's a diva, all right, said Misty Rose's owner Kristyl Adams. She's always telling the (two) other dogs in the house what to do. When she's not dressed as a witch and winning costume contests, Misty Rose serves as a therapy dog for abused women and children and as a service dog, sniffing out cancer, seizures and asthma. For more information, to donate, or to volunteer for Animal Friends of the Valley, call (951) 674-0618 or go to www.animalfriendsofthevalley.com.
