'We really wanted to broaden the focus this year and not only include all lung diseases, but the fact that air quality is such a big issue in the majority of California,' said Terry Roberts, area director for the organization.
She said San Bernardino and Riverside counties have some of the worst air quality in the nation and said although a big percentage of the state s cities are impacted by poor air quality, California tends to be a leader for its air quality improvement efforts.
'We re a driver to set the standard for the rest of the country,' Roberts said.
Sprouting off of the association s national Asthma Walk fundraiser which started in 2001, she said beginning this year the California organization is piloting its Healthy Walk initiative with walks held during the fall and spring of next year in cities throughout the state.
She said the rest of the nation will continue its fundraising efforts through the Asthma Walks.
Roberts said in the past, even though the funds from the asthma walks helped sustain all of their programs, people believed it only focused on asthma
