Shreveport-Bossier City residents wouldn't face such strict requirements because ozone levels here are lower. However, they may have to curb everyday activities like filling their gas tanks or cutting grass if ozone levels spike in the summer. Such 'ozone action days' also could force people with asthma, heart problems and respiratory illnesses to stay indoors.
Aucoin and other DEQ officials warned that failing to meet the standards after several years of efforts could lead to tougher rules like those in Baton Rouge, warned Aucoin and other Environmental Quality officials.
Mike Murray, a safety/environmental compliance employee with J&W Operating, scribbled notes as Aucoin and others spoke. He previously worked in compliance and management with the wood products industry.
Murray said he knew the ozone standards would change but wasn't familiar with the proposed requirements the Environmental Protection Agency issued in March. 'I want to make sure our company complies.'
