On Monday morning, Baldwin woke up to clean the boy because he had soiled himself overnight. Baldwin said he cleaned the toddler and put him back to bed.
But both defendants admitted to authorities that the boy was then beaten over a period of four hours.
The boy became unresponsive after being hit multiple times, and the couple said they thought he was having an asthma attack. When breathing treatments did not revive him, the couple called 9-1-1 and the boy was taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital.
Doctors noted a massive head injury, cuts and severe bruising covering most of his body before he was transported to All Childrens Hospital in Tampa for further treatment.
The toddler was in critical condition today and remains unconscious.
Baldwin and Lawrence face charges of aggravated child abuse and are in the Manatee County Jail without bond.
Lawrence was arrested, investigators say, because she initially lied and did not take all measures to stop the beating
