You can blame the human rhinovirus for that nasty runny nose and sneeze, since it causes as many as half of common colds. But it's actually not the virus but its ability to manipulate your genes that causes some annoying cold symptoms.
Researchers the University of Calgary, the University of Virginia and Procter & Gamble have shown that HRV hijacks many of your genes and triggers an over-the-top immune response. The research is published in November's American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. The researchers hope what they learn about the common cold will impact more serious conditions, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
They inoculated volunteers with either HRV or a sham, then obtained cell scrapings from the nasal passages eight and 48 hours later. At eight hours, there was no difference, but by 48 hours, more than 6,500 genes had been up- or down-regulated in the HRV subjects, many of those genes making either antiviral proteins or making pro-inflammatory cytokines

Clearly, Mr. Kopp refers to the overwhelming citizens' concerns about the proposed Titan cement plant which promises 160 new jobs to the area. Yes, new jobs are needed but at what cost.
Titan, which would be the 4th largest cement plant in the U.S., would release more than 3,000 tons per year of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide, nearly 300 tons per year of airborne particulates, and as much as 263 pounds per year of mercury. Increases in these pollutants correlates to increases in respiratory illnesses such as asthma and lung disease, and mercury has well-known neurotoxic effects on human health. These
dangerous airborne chemicals would occur within 5 miles of where nearly 5,000 children will attend schools, and only 6 miles from downtown Wilmington. Also to be considered are mining operations which could cause contamination of the Castle Hayne Aquifer, a source of drinking water
